A Guide To Setting S.M.A.R.T Goals

So many of us have goals that at one point meant the world to us, but somewhere down the line we put them on hold and eventually stopped working towards them. Having a goal is a beautiful thing! Unfortunately, allowing it to stay in your head as a thought, doesn’t present a real opportunity for working towards achieving it.

Setting goals is a term that we hear often, but what does it really mean? Well, for starters your goal must be clearly defined. If you vaguely state what you want that is not necessarily setting a goal. Here is an example of a well defined goal: “This week I will workout on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for a minimum of 30 minutes each day. ” The goal is clear, and specific, with a measure to determine completion.

The best way to establish effective goals is through using the S.M.A.R.T goal setting method.

S- Is for specific.

Make sure that your goal is clear and weak defined.

M- Is for measurable.

Always identify specific criteria that will allow you to measure the progress that you are making towards your goal.

A- Is for attainable.

You must assess whether or not you can actually accomplish what you are setting out to do.

R- Is for relevant.

Your goal should be relevant to the direction that you ultimately want to go in life; personally, or professionally.

T- Is for time-bound.

Your goal should have a specific deadline. Attaching a clear timeframe will help you avoid falling victim to procrastination.

I hope that this breakdown makes it easier for you to understand how to set your goals so that you are able to map out an action plan that will guide you towards achievement!
